Behind The Lens

Location

Actually the photo consists of three shots: the model with the truck tire, the abandoned place and the tire stack. The model with the tire was shot in a fitness studio - why the hell do they have truck tires in a fitness studio ;)

Time

As we only used artificial light, the time of the day does not have any impact on the picture.

Lighting

The model was light with three softboxes (a 90cm Octa from camera left and to 130 cm strip lightes right and left from the model). The reason for this was to achieve a well balanced, but structured light in order to seamlessly compose the model into the abandoned place.

Equipment

I use a Nikon D7000 (yes, you actually can create great pictures with a half frame camera ;). I don't use tripods as it impairs my flexibility during the shoot. The lens was my favorite portrait lens the Nikkor 50mm f1.4, which delivers outstanding constant sharpness in precise focus. I used three Speedlights (Yongnuos) with soft boxes (octa and 2 strips).

Inspiration

Well, initially the shooting was planned as a fitness and pole dancing shooting. When we recognized the truck tire in the equipment room of the fitness studio (again: I really don't know why the have truck tires in a fitness studio) and remembered that the international women day was just ahead, the idea popped up to show that only women can work very hard and still look very beautiful. We tried different perspectives and poses and found this one the best to corroborate the idea.

Editing

On the model only some limited post processing steps where necessary, mainly dodge & burn. The main work of course was required for the composing (cutting of the model from the backgound, place it into the abandoned place, adjust the perspective and the lights). I gave the whole picture a warm look and added some light rays to enhance the late afternoon flavor of the picture.

In my camera bag

I always pack my bag according to the planned shooting. My must haves are camera body (of course) with battery grip (as I shoot in portrait format a lot), my Nikkor 35mm F1.8 and 50mm F1.4 are no brainers. I try to avoid zoom lenses when I have the shooting situation under control. Of course when shooting events and stuff you need a proper zoom lens (I use the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 which optical strength let me forget the poor mechanical construction). When shooting outdoors I also bring my old war horse the Nikkor 80-200mm ED f2.8 which optical features and mechanical construction is still unbeaten. It is particularly helpful on concerts when you have to fight for your place in the reporter's ditch. When shooting in the studio or on similar locations (like here in the fitness studio) I prefer to shoot tethered to my Microsoft Surface Pro 3. It gives you a much better impression of the image (lights & shadows, sharpness etc.) than the best camera display in the world could do. Also I have everything in my Lightroom catalogue when returning home from the shooting and I can immediately start the selection and post processing process.

Feedback

Very important in doing composings is that you have a specific idea about the result. At the best you already have the background picture and know the specific light situation to adust the lighting of the model appropriately. As the idea with the composing came up spontaneously during the shooting I had to work in the opposite direction: get a balanced light on the model which gives me the maximum flexibility for the background picture. With adding some light rays through the windows in photoshop I was able to give the natural light of the background picture some further direction to adapt to the light situation of the model.
