Behind The Lens

Location

The photo is of one of my granddaughters while she was teething, so you can imagine the upset she was going through. The photo is a rest-bite between the crying, pain, screaming and exhaustion. I took the shot while she was cradled in her mothers arms in a very heavy sleep on one of those "Quality Time" visits to us on the coast. It was purely a chance shot as I walked by her mother while they sat quietly in the lounge with french doors behind them open letting in the cool evening air.

Time

The shot was taken around 19:00 on a very sunny Saturday evening with the sun behind her and her mother. It was one of four shots that I took in succession.

Lighting

The shot spoke for itself, one of calm, relaxed, contentment. The shadow over her face is from her mother looking down at her which is what draw my attention, the light, shadow, light across her face

Equipment

I used my Nikon D800 hand-held with a Nikon AF-S 24-70mm 1:2.8 lens. No flash, no filters.

Inspiration

On this occasion it was my granddaughter and trying to get a shot of her on their visit to us, however the weekend didn't go as planned due to the general state of misery my granddaughter was going through with her teething, However I'm glad to say, she did brighten up the next day but I achieved my intention with this one shot.

Editing

I carried out my post-processing in Lightroom with highlights and shadows, cropping, vignetting and turning to black and white. I shot fairly close at f2.8 to give me a shallow depth of field and blur out the background to bring the focus on the eyes and mouth.

In my camera bag

My carry bag which is with me on most occasions holds my Nikon D800, Nikon AF-S 24-70mm 2.8 lens and Nikon AF-S 35mm 1.8 Prime lens. Manfrotto 190XPROB with Ball head tripod. A set of ND filters and a ProStop 10 stop filter. A Phottix Remote Release, spares battery, spare SD cards and note book. I find the note book very important to note what, why and when on certain occasions. Certainly when I haven't practised something for some time, like moon shots or night work, I will refer back to my notes. As they say, "If you don't use it, you loose it".

Feedback

Know your equipment and get to know it well, as its been said before, its not the camera or equipment, it's the guy behind the glass that makes the shot. Always move around your subject to see the best viewpoint and take you're time, slow everything down to enable you to savor the moment.
