An iconic classic from the age of steam. The Flying Scotsman has just undergone a multi-million pound restoration and was on display at the National Railway Museum in York. There had been a snow flurry the morning before the photo was taken which had melted leaving the large puddles giving clear reflections of the engine.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the National Railway Museum in York, England. The Flying Scotsman was on display outside for a few days after recently completing a multi-million pound restoration.

Time

The photo was taken early afternoon at the start of March. There had been a brief but heavy snow shower in the morning but the temperature afterwards meant it melted quite rapidly, leaving these large puddles in the train yard in whih it was possible to get the reflection of the train.

Lighting

Normal daylight so nothing really - it was quite cloudy as can be seen but the sun, however shaded, was behind the camera and lighting the front of the train.

Equipment

Hand held Sony Cybershot DSC-HX300 bridge camera - with no other lenses, filters or accessories.

Inspiration

I went into town to take some photos before the snow all melted but, having taken these I thought I'd visit the Railway Museum as well to see the Scotsman while it was on a brief visit. Seeing the puddles in trainyard I was inspired to try and get an image with a reflection of the engine - it took quite a while to get the image though as, what can't be seen in the photo are the crowds of people who all seemed to want selfies with the engine - but eventually I managed to be in the right place to get the reflection and the engine both tourist-free.

Editing

I've recently started playing with EasyHDR to improve some of photos. The original version of this photo was in colour but the engine has a bright red plate on the front which seemed wrong when looking at the pictures - however changing it to b/w solved this problem as well as bringing out some other details.

In my camera bag

I'm only a complete amateur who takes snaps of things 'on the fly'.....as such the only thing I ever carry in my bag is my camera.

Feedback

I'm not really the right person to give advice as most of the time I don't really know what I'm doing :-) If I had to offer one piece though I suppose it would be to trust your judgement and take photos of things you like or that look interesting - if you like it then the chances are that other people might like it as well.
