Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from my campsite after photographing Canyonlands National Park all day long.

Time

It seems as if the only time to take a Milky Way image is in the middle of the night, but in this case it was about 8:30pm. By 9:30 the moon was rising and all opportunity was lost. I got my shot AND got into my sleeping bag early!

Lighting

Because this was my first attempt at capturing the night sky, I just wanted it dark enough to see the Milky Way. It never occurred to me to light up the foreground trees.

Equipment

This was shot on a tripod with a Nikon D7100 and an old Tamron 28-75, f/2.8

Inspiration

I have always been fascinated with night skies and the mysteries of the Milky Way. Being a very new photographer, I just set up and started experimenting!

Editing

I developed the raw file by lightening the exposure slightly and adding a bit of contrast. The editing was pretty simplistic as I was only using the program available on my iMac.

In my camera bag

I always love to have everything with me! I start with my camera which is a Nikon D7100, then I like to have all my options covered for lens length. I carry a Nikon 24-120 f/4, Nikon 70-200 f/4, Tokina 11-24 f/2.8. Because I live where wildlife is plenty, I always have my Nikon 200-500 f/5.6 in the car. I also love using my hand held, 2 stop neutral density filter to capture a more dynamic sky.

Feedback

Because I was new at shooting night skies, I didn't know to prepare your camera and lens as much as possible before you go out. Now I get it... Scout a good location before dark that will give your image foreground interest, check one of the many night sky apps that will show you the exact location of the Milky Way hour by hour to better help you find a location. Then, focus your lens on a distant object then switch everything to manual and tape the focus in place for later. Have fun!
