Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken out in our garden in Reading near London. Me and my Partner both work as performers so primarily I was just getting some headshots for her portfolio. However as it got cold she needed a jacket so we played with a few shots with the hood up.

Time

It was late in the afternoon, the sun was lower in the sky and the temperature was getting cooler, hence the jacket.

Lighting

It took us a while to find the right light but finally got this shot when we would stood behind the garage and some cloud cover came over, this helped greatly with diffusing the light.

Equipment

This was shot with my Olympus OMD EM-1 with a 45mm prime F1.8.

Inspiration

As I said previously it wasn't a shot that a set out to get, it was only fortunately now, that it got colder and she needed a jacket to keep her warm in the garden. Once it was on I just wanted to capture a couple of shots with the wonderful faux fur hood framing her face.

Editing

Yes, all editing was done within Lightroom. I soften the skin and added some more colour with to the lips with the target adjustment brush. Also adding contrast to the hair and fur of the coat. I also added a slightly pink/purple gradient filter from the top of the image.

In my camera bag

When I go out I'm limited to embark and debark times of the ship that I work on therefore I prepare for a number of situations as I don't fully know what I'm going to catch that day. So I go out with a my 12-40mm pro lens attached to my em1 and then in the bag I have 45mm prime, a 75mm macro and a 75-300mm telephoto lens. I also have a flash, a guerrilla pod and cleaning wipes.

Feedback

If I'm honest I'm not 100% happy with this image as I feel personally the eyes could be more in focus than they are. This was one of the first portrait shots I did and learning from this I'd advise take as many shots as possible and pay attention to the details of the image. Also If using natural light try and make the most out of cloud cover, reflective services and the shade.
