Location
This photo was taken on the southwest coast of Taiwan. This area is really rocky and it would seem that this ship came too close. A few weeks after this was taken, a typhoon came and the ship was washed back out to sea.
Time
I first laid eyes on the ship around 10 am, but it was only accessible from one area which was about a 2 hour walk away. When I arrived at the wreck, it was a little after noon. The approach was really awesome because it allowed me to photograph the ship from afar also.
Lighting
The lighting at this location was really harsh. It was midday and the sun was burning brightly. I didn't have a tripod with me either so I could't use any filters so I went with black and white. It worked well at the harsh light mixed with the black and white really helped bring out the drama in this scene.
Equipment
This photo was taken with a old Nikon D60. I had just gotten into photography at this point and I purchased it from a friend for about $75. I was using a wide angle lens a borrowed from a friend but, I honestly can't remember the lens details. That was all I had at the time. Those old cameras still do nice work!

Inspiration
The inspiration of this photo was the drama in the scene. I looked at this wreck for about 2 hours as I walked towards it. The entire walk was up the coastline which was littered with debris from the wreck. So by time I reached the site, I was fully involved in the drama that had played out there. This is what I wanted to capture and share in this photo.
Editing
The post-processing of this photo was very basic because at the time, I didn't have much software to work with other than the free stuff I could find online. I brought down the exposure a little bit, reduced the highlights to bring out the clouds, increased the sharpness (just little) to show the skin of the ship, added a bit of contrast which was lost in the harsh light, and converted to black and white.
In my camera bag
I've only really been doing photography for about 2 years now, so I am still trying different set ups. I started with a Nikon D60 and kit lens. After about 6 months I purchased a Nikon D5200 which I used for about 1 year. I am currently using a Sony A6000 which I have been very pleased with. With this body, I use a Sigma 19mm 2.8, Sigma 30mm 2.8 and an old Canon 50mm 1.8. Most of my photography is done traveling so I try to keep my bag as light as possible. Other than my camera and lenses, I always carry my tripod, lens pen, extra battery and 1 ND filter.
Feedback
When you are traveling, often times you may only have one day or even just an hour to get the right shot. This makes it really difficult sometimes because the conditions may not cooperate with your schedule. Don't get frustrated. Do a little reading about what works best in bad conditions and practice in those conditions. Also, take a second to explore the scene you are photographing. What are you thinking? What emotion does it trigger in you? Then try to find a way to express these feelings in the photograph. People like beautiful photos, but they love photos that trigger emotions or tell a story. Good luck and keep shooting.
