Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a portrait studio that I rent for my photography excersizes (Moscow, Russia)

Time

Since I was using studio lighting the time of the day did not matter too much. I guess it was about early evening. The studio has no windows so it was easy to loose the count of hours.

Lighting

I used 2 stirpe softboxes from both sides (slighly inwards) of my model and one reflector on her waist level.

Equipment

I used my Canon 6D and my primary lens which is Canon 24-105mm

Inspiration

I was trying to copy some lighting schems I've learned from video tutorials on web. This one was inspired by lighting I saw Peter Hurly uses for his headshots. However I didn't manage to copy it excatly but came up with my own variation that I liked.

Editing

I used Lightroom and Photoshop to make some small adjustments and b/w convertion

In my camera bag

Canon 6D, Canon 24-105mm lens for indoor and Canon 135mm for outdoor shootings

Feedback

My advice is to experiment with different lighting technics! Watch video tutorials, look at your favourite photographers work and try to analize their lighting by the shadows on the model's face, by the position of catchlights in the eyes. Don't stick just to one or two lighting set ups. You will be thrilled when you learn how to capture the light!
