Behind The Lens

Location
The photo was taken in West Papua (Indonesia) during almost a two weeks trekking across the Baliem Valley. The subjec is a warrior of a Dani tribe, a minor an ethnic group sighted for the first time only in 1938 and still living as in the Stone Age.
Time
This photo was taken on August 12th, 2013 at 6:39pm.
Lighting
As far as possible, I'm in use to take advantage of natural light. It is very important to check the weather forecast mostly if your journey plan doesn't allow to spend more than a couple of days on the site.
Equipment
This image was shot on a Nikon D600 with a NIKKOR AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G IF ED VR lens without involving a tripod.
Inspiration
I remember how difficult was to find a good position to be able to take the image in front of the warrior I choose to be the main subject. The hardest part was to find the right position at the right time for shooting by avoiding other warriors and keeping a natural as well as captivating expression. My aim was to realize a good composition from an interesting point of view and with a dramatic sky. I spent a great among of time looking for the best combinations of those elements (availability of a great amount of time is one of the advanteges to be an habitual lonely traveler...). Fortunately, at the end the result was worth my efforts.
Editing
Yes, I do. I regulated shadows and lights by using Lightroom in order to bring out the details of the skin. Moreover, I decrease a bit the saturation of the sky and warm colors trying to making the picture a bit more dramatic, according to the main subject and scene.
In my camera bag
As a frequent traveller and backpacker adicted, my choise in term of gear is usually a good tradeoff between quality and size/weight. I use a body NIKON D600 and the following lens and filters: NIKKOR AF-S 16-35mm f/4G ED VR, NIKKOR AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G IF ED VR, NIKKOR AF-S 70-200mm f/4G ED N VR. Few accessories complete my equipment: KENKO Digital Filter Circular PL, MANFROTTO Tripod MK293A4-A3RC1, KAAVIE Tracolla fast release, METZ Flash Mecablitz 52 AF-1.
Feedback
Concerning the composition, I suggest to move a lot in order to discover the best place to shot. In the specific case of this picture, I decided to place me in front of the leader in order to put him in the foreground having a wedge formation at his back. This choose of composition in my opinion helps to underline the rule of the main sobject. Moreover, I placed his dominant eye in the center of my composition. Then, before to take the picture, I laid myself on the ground in order to obtain a more interesting point of view.
