Location
This photo was taken on the West Rim Trail which is a 30.5 mile trail that runs along Pine Creek Gorge, AKA, The Pennsylvania Grand Canyon. This shot was at about the mid point near Bradley Wales Picnic area.Time
This was taken early morning. In this area, the fog tends to settle down in the canyon and then will start to roll around as morning breaks.Lighting
The trail runs along the rim of the canyon, in this spot, the canyon drops off just out of frame to the left. I was able to capture the rays of light as the fog rolled up and out of the canyon over the trail where the sun light then beamed through the fog.Equipment
This was shot handheld with a Nikon D90 with a Nikon 18-105 mm lens.Inspiration
I have hiked this trail several times and during this day I drove to an access to catch a sunrise over the canyon. As I was walking back from a vista that's when I was greated with this scene as the fog was rolling up and over the rim onto the trail.Editing
Some minor adjustments to increase the warmth of the photo. In my camera bag
I always have ND filters, I tend to shoot a fair amount of waterfalls and love that silky effect of a long exposure. I also have a remote for those instances where I want to add a human element to a nature landscape. I set the camera up on tripod and jump into the frame. This can be great for adding perspective to certain elements.Feedback
Morning light is the best, especially in the forest. If you want to capture magical forest scenes, you need to be up early and be patient. I once waiting for almost 2 hours for fog to lift in the same canyon at another location but it was well worth it!
