Behind The Lens

Location

The islands of Hawaii offer vast opportunities for every aspiring photographer. The Big Island, Hawaii, is the most diverse with warm beaches, tropical forests, grasslands, snow covered peaks and, of course, it ever changing lava terrain. Hawaii gives man the ability to witness new land mass being formed and it is mesmerizing. This photo was captured from a boat just far enough from the lava flow to escape the splatter of molten lava exploding into cool waters, but close enough to feel the heated air and water surrounding us.

Time

Out little boat arrived at this site a little after 10:00 am making lighting conditions ideal with clear blue skies overhead.

Lighting

I like natural lighting no matter what the time of day. The sun was approaching its highest point but still low enough to avoid glare on the water, which provide me the opportunity to relax and just snap away without concern myself with details.

Equipment

A handheld Fuji landed this shot made difficult by the constant movement of the boat.

Inspiration

Creation! We have only to look around to find inspiration surrounding us. Capturing a moment in time can never be quite be recreated. It is in an instant changed, transformed into something similar yet unique to its own moment in time. Capturing memories to be shared is always my inspiration.

Editing

I simply enhanced to the contrast to better define hot red/orange of the lava hitting the cool blue/white of the ocean.

In my camera bag

My equipment bag at the time this photo was taken consisted of a three lens--a wide (not used), a telephoto (not used), and my regular 35mil. I carried several filters and cleaning supplies. Now, I simply carry a compact simple Canon that I can carry in a should sling. As I age simpler is better!

Feedback

My advice to all who pick up a camera is to keeping clicking the shutter especially in this digital age where one need not worry about film speed, monetary cost and processing fees! We learn by doing. Keep doing!
