The sun rises in the Snowy Range over the Medicine Bow Forest. The first rays of light awaken the landscape throwing wind and color around.

I woke up one morning in the Snowy Range Mountains to overcast skies and 30+ mph gusts. I was tempted to stay in the tent but begrudgingly I finally got out and made a short hike up the nearby hill. I found these perfectly positioned wildflowers and made a quick composition just as the sun was coming up. Normally I'd prefer the flowers to be still but the motion really added to the dynamics of the image this time and the flare helps to bring a human element into the image. Snowy Range is one of my favorite places in Wyoming and every time I visit I come back with a great and unique image.

Behind The Lens

Location
I captured this image on a family camping trip in Wyoming's Snowy Range.
Time
I woke up pre-dawn to overcast skies and 30+ mph gusts.
Lighting
Without the break in the clouds, this would have been a much different morning. I was lucky enough to capture the sunburst just as it was coming over the forest, a couple minutes later the light was much harsher and the opportunity gone.
Equipment
I used a Sony a900 and Zeiss 16-35mm f/2.8 to take this image.
Inspiration
I hadn't planned to photograph this location but was just fortunate to find the right conditions to make it.
Editing
I applied standard processing for a RAW file to finish this image. Adjustments were made to contrast, exposure, highlights, saturation, etc.
In my camera bag
Right now I have everything in a first gen F-Stop Loka pack or my Osprey Exos 58 backpacking pack. Since switching to mirrorless I've been able to get most of my gear in a small ICU while my camera sits in a chest pouch for easy access. In my bag I currently have the following camera gear: a7R II, a7R as backup, Sony's FE lenses: 16-35mm f/4, 24-70mm f/4, and 70-200mm f/4, a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 for night work, Rode shotgun mic for video, Neewer L-Plate, Hoya HD3 and Firecrest Polarizers, about 7 batteries and large external batteries (better to have too many I guess), Feisol CT-3442 tripod with Photoclam Gold ballhead, and a Lee Big Stopper filter. Depending on how far I'm hiking I'll remove certain items to make my load lighter. For non-camera equipment, I usually have rain gear, puffy jacket and pants, and a Steripen to filter water while hiking. My favorite piece of gear is probably my Western Mountaineering puffy flight pants, never underestimate the value of warm legs while photographing at night!
Feedback
It's hard to motivate myself to get out of my sleeping bag in the morning when conditions seem awful, don't make that same mistake, some of my favorite images are ones I wouldn't have captured otherwise.
