This photo was taken in Liverpool, England at The Albert Docks. I was with my fiancée and while she was walking ahead my head was looking straight up at the spiral staircase! I have since found out it is actually a slide!Time
This was taken in the afternoon. I was sightseeing at the time so wasn't thinking of golden hours and early starts. I was lucky enough that the sky was very bruised that day, it added a real sense of foreboding to the shot.Lighting
I got lucky with the great sky! It was a very changeable day so the lighting was different every time I looked in the viewfinder.Equipment
This was taken on my first DSLR a Sony A550. I have since upgraded to the A77ii and I absolutely love it. Sony always play second fiddle to Nikon and Canon but they make great cameras!Inspiration
Liverpool is a fabulous city with a great mix of old industrial 19th century work buildings and ultra modern constructions. It was European Capital of Culture a few years ago so there has been a lot of investment. The buildings at the dock are grand and impressive. This spiral fire escape attached to the outside of such a large rectangular building really jumped out for me. I had to shoot it.Editing
I processed the image in Photoshop. I straightened it, boosted levels and contrast to make the sky really pop, but not a lot of work was done at all.In my camera bag
I carry my A77ii with 3 lenses. My daily go to lens is a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8. I love my Sigma 50mm f2.8 prime lens too for portraits. I also have a Sony 75-300mm f4.5 lens.Feedback
When the crowd are looking forwards, we should be looking up, down and behind us! There are great photos available everywhere. Try a different angle, get on the ground, go to the top of a building. Anything that will give you a different vantage point. With every photo I take I want to create something that will stand out. I won't always succeed but it drives me on. Competitions like the ones on Viewbug are great for getting us out there shooting different things. It spurs us on and pushes us to be better. If I can win a prize, then so can you!
