Location
This was taken in my studio at the end of a shoot with Briella. I had seen a photograph that someone had done as a "cover" for 50 Shades of Gray, which had a line drawing of a door, slightly open, with light streaming in as part of the final image. The model had been shot from the front with her hands bound and held up over her head, it was a good photo and well lit, but it didn't feel it fitted in with the line drawing of the door and the way the light was shown coming through the doorTime
We were at the end of the shoot, probably around 4.30 in the afternoon, I needed something to fill in the last 10 minutes before I started to tidy up. I quickly set up a light behind the model and helped her into the 'cuffs'. I had her turn slightly for different shots so the light would be falling slightly differently on her body each time. As she was wearing a pair of 9" heels at the time, not having taken them off from the previous set, turning round in near darkness was a little difficult, she has not let me forget it.Lighting
I wanted the shot to look as if it was a darkened room with a shaft of light coming from a door that was slightly open, which was the impression given by the door on the original image. I used a single monolight with a striplight softbox, 36" x 12", if I recall, and a honeycomb grid. This was placed behind and about 30 to 45 degree right of the model, to give the impression the door was behind her and to her right. I metered the light to get f2.8 where it fell at the edges of her body, I focused on the cuffs, and used the narrow depth of field to get a slightly softer image where the light was falling.Equipment
Canon 5DS-R with 100 mm f2.8, lighting was a single Promaster PL400, with a 36" x 12" softbox and honeycomb grid, triggered by Pocket Wizard.Inspiration
A photograph that I saw of a made up "cover" for 50 Shades of Grey. I felt the lighting and pose on the original photograph didn't seem to fit with way the final image was shown, so I changed the lighting to what I felt fitted better. For the pose, I wanted the model to be anonymous as I thought it would work better for this shot.Editing
I actually do very little post-processing, I'm not very good with photoshop, but for this image, I brightened up the area around her wrists to show the cuffs a bit better, they were a little too dark in the original image, and warmed the image slightly. In my camera bag
I generally pack 2 Canon bodies, I love the full frame format so I have the 5D MK3 and the 5DS-R. My most common lens is the 70 - 200mm f2.8, but that gets heavy for a 4 hour studio shoot, so I sometimes use the 100mm f2.8 macro, this is a nice versatile lens. I also have a 50mm f1.8, for the price the optics on this lens are amazing, but on a full frame body I find I'm getting too close to the model, I like to give her some space.Feedback
This is a fairly easy studio shot to take using just a single light, it's also a good shot to use to experiment with different sizes of softboxes to explore how the light falls on the body. Having the model turn slightly and also you moving round the model will change the way the light hits the body.
