This is the city of Pittsburgh as seen through a crystal ball. I twas taken the morning on 2-20-2016 from the North Shore by the Mr. Rogers' memorial statue. I was on a photo adventure with my daughter and step-daughter.

I was getting frustrated because it was still dark and needed to use a slow shutter speed in order to take the shot. I was trying to hold up the crystal ball with one hand and take the picture holding my camera in the other hand. I decided to give up on the crystal ball shot and moved on to shooting the city using my tripod. My step daughter took the crystal ball and set it on the Mr. Rogers statue and asked if this worked for my purposes. It was perfect! Because she found a place to set the crystal ball - I was able to take the shot using my tripod and timer.

Behind The Lens

Location
This is the city of Pittsburgh as seen through a crystal ball. I twas taken the morning on 2/20/2016 from the North Shore by the Mr. Rogers' memorial statue. I was on a photo adventure with my daughter and step-daughter.
Time
This shot was taken just before sunrise, at 7:45 AM.
Lighting
I was getting frustrated because it was still dark and needed to use a slow shutter speed in order to take the shot. I was trying to hold up the crystal ball with one hand and take the picture holding my camera in the other hand. I decided to give up on the crystal ball shot and moved on to shooting the city using my tripod. My step daughter took the crystal ball and set it on the Mr. Rogers statue and asked if this worked for my purposes. It was perfect! Because she found a place to set the crystal ball - I was able to take the shot using my tripod and timer.
Equipment
I use a Canon Rebel T5, tripod and timer. My settings are f/11, ISO-100 and exposure time 2.5 seconds. My focal length is 127 mm. I use the 2 second timer on my camera to prevent camera shake.
Inspiration
I always shoot the city whether is it evening or early morning. I wanted to try something different. I have always seen beautiful crystal ball photography and decided to give it a shot. This shot would not have been possible if it hadn't been for my step daughter having the idea to set the crystal ball up on the Mr. Rogers statue.
Editing
I use Lightroom for post processing. I crop and rotate the image and sharpen it.
In my camera bag
I don't have a lot of camera equipment. I have my Canon T5, 18-55mm lens, 55-250mm lens, 75-300mm lens, 50mm prime lens and my tripod.
Feedback
As with any low light photography - always use a tripod and either the timer or a remote shutter button. I always use manual mode and set my ISO and Aperture first. From there I adjust my shutter speed until I like what I see in the view finder. In this case - f/11, ISO 100 and exposure time 2.5 seconds.
