Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the Salt River in Star Valley , Wyoming

Time

This was very early in the morning, probably not to long after sunrise, It was December and about 30 below zero, the whole valley was fogged in, as the water was warmer than the air. You can see a skim of ice on the water, the sun was just getting bright enough to start shining thru the fog. Giving the whole picture a very cold , eerie feel.

Lighting

The sun bouncing off the fog and snow, helped light this picture

Equipment

Shot with a Nikon D3300, With the standard 18-55mm lens, knelt down in the snow to get the angle and reflection I wanted.

Inspiration

Loved the look of the frosted bushes, ice, and snow all in dim light, bathed in fog.

Editing

No post-provessing

In my camera bag

In my bag I carry , a polarized filter, a couple macro lens , a 300mm, 18-105mm, usually have the 18-55mm on the camera. With these 3 lens , I can pretty much covered most situations. Also always carry an extra battery.

Feedback

Shooting in low light, in extreme cold and fog is tricky, keeping your camera warm is essential, it is then just a matter of waiting for enough light to break through the fog, not enough light and you lose definition, to much and all the white completely washes out your photo and again you lose definition. It will take you several times to figure it out, and achieve what you are wanting to see in your photo. Lucky for me my valley is fogged in often with thick fog, letting me practice taking photos in the fog.
