Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot in an unlikely place for a photo shoot - an apartment building basement. I really liked the raw, grittiness feel of the surroundings and it was a perfect backdrop for this shoot.

Time

This photo was shot at night. I wanted to be able to control the light as much as possible and a night shoot totally let me do that.

Lighting

This photo series was slightly challenging in that I was shooting with existing light from the garage. The natural light was flourescent, which is not the best looking light out there. However, I was able to achieve stunning results by choosing the right white balance setting. The results were amazing.

Equipment

This photo was shot with my Nikon D90 and my 17-50mm 2.8 Tamron. No flash or tripod was necessary.

Inspiration

I was inspired to take this shot by the couple in the photo. I had shot Colette (the girl in the photo) a couple of times and always had a great experience. I once shot Cam (her boyfriend in this photos) at one of his shows and we all hit it off. They had been wanting some photos together on Cam's Vulcan. And we got a great series.

Editing

As usual, I try to limit the amount of post that I do. There was some minimal contrast addition and deeping of the blacks. I wanted the photo to have that gritty and raw feeling.

In my camera bag

I usually travel with my main camera body, my Nikon D90 and several lenses - from a 50mm Nikon to my 55 to 200mm Nikon to my 17-70mm Tamron.

Feedback

My advice would be that you really need to have a vision for your shot. Without that, this rest doesn't matter. Then think about the look and feel you are trying to achieve. For something similar to this, crank up the ISO a bit to allow for a slightly higher shutter speed and use and f stop to give you a mid amount of depth of field. This was shot at 1000 ISO, 1/90 speed and f/4 aperture.
