Location
I took this photo near where these two live--a sunny little field in rural Nebraska.Time
When you're photographing outdoors, there really is only one time of day: the golden hour. I took advantage of the low, bright sun to keep the mood of the shoot airy, bright and a bit whimsical.Lighting
Shooting a subject with the sun behind them can be tricky; I exposed for the ambient light and then filled in my subjects with a flash and softbox mounted on camera.Equipment
Canon 6d, 85mm and 430 Canon SpeedliteInspiration
These two LOVE their boxer dogs. In general, the whole family--dogs and humans--are very photogenic. They treat the dogs a lot like toddlers and I think this photo captured that mood very much.Editing
Not much--some basic sharpening and maybe lightening of shadows and that's it.In my camera bag
The obvious answer is a range of lenses for different angles and effects (Canon 85mm 1.2/ Canon 70-200mm 2.8 / Canon 16-35mm 2.8). I also always carry a a Manfrotto LED light for effects if and when I need them for fill light or light painting. I also normally have a flash and a small, camera mounted softbox and probably most interestingly, a water spray bottle. Being able to add dewey effects to macro photos or portraits on the fly is a huge plus. Oh, and a variety of different colored glow sticks!Feedback
Don't pose your subjects. Be a fly on the wall. Tell them to *do* rather than to pose. The best shots always happen in action--for example, I asked Jenna here to put her beanie on the dog and the rest is history. Instead of saying, "Okay, stand like this and put your hand here and..." say, "Hey, there is some hair in your face, can you fix that real quick?" You're going to get a great candid shot of the person touching their hair that isn't forced and they won't overthink what they're doing as they would if you say, "Okay, touch your hair and play with it." Because really, what does that even mean?
