Taken in the warm late afternoon sun, this five image panorama shows the view from Rifugio Auronzo in the Italian Dolomites over the peaks of Cadini (L), Sorapiss (C) and Cristallo (R). The lake and village of Misurina can be seen just right of centre.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Tre Cime national park in the Dolomites in Italy. This particular viewpoint is very near to the mountain hut Rifugio Auronzo, where I was staying that night.

Time

Late afternoon, a bit before sunset. The light was gorgeous at that time.

Lighting

See above

Equipment

Nikon d5100 with 35 mm prime lens.

Inspiration

This viewpoint over Cadini, Sorapiss and Cristallo is one of my favourites the Dolomites. I particularly like the view of Cadini with its jagged peaks. The lighting I had on this afternoon was the best I'd had during my visit.

Editing

It's a panorama consisting of five images, so there was the stitching involved to produce the final image. Panoramas are great with the prime lens because, although very sharp, it lacks the width to capture a scene like this. Other than that it was only minor contrast adjustments and correction for chromatic aberration.

In my camera bag

The camera, 18-55 mm kit lens, the 35 mm prime I've mentioned and 50-200 mm telephoto lens. I also have a couple of filters, a neutral density and a circular polarizer.

Feedback

The Dolomites are blessed with numerous mountain huts. If capturing landscapes during the hours of best lighting it is very nice to be close to a warm bed without having to hike up or down a mountain in the dark.
