Nicely done and beautiful. I think this is the only, in flight, stop action, wings open butterfly shot I've ever seen. Great capture.

Location
This photo was taken in Diep River, Cape Town on a local green belt while walking my dog.Time
This photo was taken at about nine thirty in the morning in winter. I stood for ages just trying to catch a butterfly, in focus, on the wing and not on a flower as usual. I used the manual focus on my lense and tracked the butterflies until I got this image. I was delighted!Lighting
I wasn't particularly thinking about lighting in the shot, I was more concerned with tracking a flying butterfly and getting the focus correct.Equipment
The image was shot with a Canon EOS 600D with a 300 mm lense and was hand held.Inspiration
I have always been fascinated with nature and most of my images are of my local neighbourhood and its critters. I wanted to get a slightly different shot from my usual one of waiting for the butterfly to land before focussing on it.Editing
I did crop this image a little. I felt the image was a little small in terms of actually seeing that the butterfly was in flight. In my camera bag
I have my Canon 600D, my 300mm and my 50mm lens in my bag at all times as well as a spare battery, a couple of lens filters and my instruction manual. There is always a lens cleaning cloth too and I keep a paper and pen in there just in case.Feedback
To take an image like this just takes patience I think and the ability to open both your eyes while tracking a moving creature. I find that if I keep both my eyes open I can see the direction the creature is going easily which in turn makes it easier to focus more quickly on the subject.
