AWESOME SHOT! I used to live on the island of Kaua'i for 3 years from 2009 to 2011 in Kapa'a Town and it was a slice of Heaven Daily!
One of the Greatest Treasures in the Hawaiian Islands is the Waimea Canyon!
Fantastic Capture!

Awesome shot! Drove through this place more than 10 times, and never get a chance to explore this trail. Perhaps, next year for sure!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on an excursion to Waimea Canyon on Kauai, HI. One of the most beautiful spots on the planet, they call this Canyon "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific"

Time

This photo was taken in the late afternoon, somewhere around the 4pm mark.

Lighting

This canyon is the the West side of Kauai so this makes for great light towards the end of the day, often times this canyon has mist or fog surrounding it but we got lucky with a beautiful clear day to carve a path straight to the Waterfall.

Equipment

I shot this using a Sony a6000 with an SEL18200 LE lens handheld.

Inspiration

My friend Felix was wondering past the fence line to check out the scenery when suddenly I heard cheering for a hand stand on the edge of a cliff, when I turned to see my friend being the one that they were cheering about I also happened to find myself in the exact position to lead one's eye to the waterfall. The photo is both a tour guide of the island and a daring feat of bravery or stupidity.

Editing

This photo have very minimal post production on it, it pretty much looked like that straight out of the camera (give or take a few highlights and shadows)

In my camera bag

I am always carrying my Sony a6000 with the SEL18200 LE, it is my go to combo for nearly every genre. I shot a lot of action so this camera has a beautiful 11 FPS to capture Surfers or in this case the moment a friend had a dumb and beautiful idea. I also carry a Pentax 645z for all my detail work, big gig fun.

Feedback

Travel with friends who are willing to "go out on a ledge", with this one it was more about timing than anything. Be present, see around you, listen to what the people, birds, or anything else might be giving you signs to "look over here". Keep your camera accessible all the time, not only that but USE IT. Not every shot is a winner but freezing when the moment happens is worse (unless it was just for you which is also beautiful). Look for leading lines in nature, these are not always easy but they do exist, bring those viewing your art on a journey through the image. Be an image creator not a picture taker, creating a feel of the total image. Be yourself!
