Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the scenic Creemore Hills area of southern Ontario, Canada, a few kilometres from my home.

Time

I woke up early to capture the shot during morning golden hour.

Lighting

It was a crystal clear morning, the sun directly at my back, a cardinal rule I try to always follow. At -20 celsius without any haze or humidity, the lighting was perfect but I almost got frostbite setting up the shot.

Equipment

I used a Sony point and shoot with tripod.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the pristine beauty of a thick fresh blanket of lake effect snow, a regular occurence where I live.

Editing

This is one of my early shots as a self-taught photographer. I did not do any postprocessing.

In my camera bag

Normally I shoot with my Motorola cell. I find how I use my tools is more important than the tools themselves. The Moto phone yields a sharp clear image every time.

Feedback

My photography has improved over time with a short photography course where I learned the basics and simply taking lots of shots. Now I shoot only in manual mode, experiment with the settings, and always edit my shots using the phone's editor and the program Paint to increase resolution. Feedback and inspiration from photo sites like viewbug and gurushots is a driver of improvement. Capturing a great shot means being aware of the beauty that surrounds you, Photography helps me appreciate life. Improvement follows.
