I took this is my living room whilst trying to learn more about low light photography.Time
It was taken in the evening with the curtains closed and one lamp lit.Lighting
I didn't use flash - only the light from the one domestic lamp which I moved around until I found a lighting situation I liked. As well as moving the lamp I moved the position of the table and the book/specs.Equipment
Taken with an Olympus E-30 and a 40-150 lens - aperture priority. Exposure was 6 secs @ f13. I used a tripod and a cable remote.Inspiration
I read a lot and I like Dickens. I wanted a shot that conveyed the simple pleasure of reading but which also let the viewer see what book was being read.Editing
I did some dodging and burning and added a vignette. In my camera bag
It really depends on where I am going and for what reason. I have an Olympus zx-1 which is a great carry round camera, an Olympus EM-5 with Lumix 14-140 and 25mm lenses which is nice and light and doesn't take up much room, and for the 'serious' stuff I have an Olympus e-30 with a variety of lenses - oh and several camera bags in various sizes.Feedback
I like low light photography but it is sometimes difficult to carry all the gear you need for long exposures. I have found that I can get good results using a bean bag or even a rolled up jacket to support the camera, and using timer delay on the camera instead of a remote cable release. This can often lead to capturing images from more interesting angles. Try it.
