Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the bank of the Royal Military Canal between Rye and Hythe.

Time

A group of us had been out at 4am looking for a good sunrise on the Romney Marsh, and after a rather less than inspired morning, we headed for a local café for breakfast, as I drove over the canal, I spotted the light streaming through an old tree on the bank, parking on the grass verge I grabbed a couple of shots before the light went.

Lighting

The natural light coming through the tree was stunning, and with a 10% zoom effect added to the surround of the tree to match it completed the image.

Equipment

I used a Sony A57, with a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens, hand held as time was of the essence, I used a grad grey screw on filter and 100 iso @ f8.

Inspiration

When you see an unexpected view of something you were not expecting and do nothing about it then you usually miss the best shot of the day and this was the case with this one

Editing

Processed with CS5, mainly just in ACR RAW, with a 10% zoom effect added to the surrounding area of the tree.

In my camera bag

I had my old A57 this day, but usually it is a A77ii, I only ever take two lenses, the 17-50mm Tamron, and an old Minolta 35-105 macro for either a bit more length or for close up work. I have a small portable lightweight tripod and a filter pouch with a couple of ND's a grad ND and a CPL.

Feedback

My photography is all about light, I tend to go out an hour before sunrise, usually for only a couple of hours, that way I keep 100% focus knowing I only have a short time to make the most of the day, staying out longer I feel, often reduces your effectiveness.
