The original building was built in 1077 as a monastery, in 1540 it became a place of worship after the monastery was closed by Henry VIII, Canterbury Cathedral still has parts which date back to 12th century, including some of the strained glass. This image is from about half way down the building where the level changes with the crypt running under this raised level.
