Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken at Club Med Ixtapa, Mexico

Time

I love to shoot around dawn and sunset during the golden hour. This is a sunrise photo.

Lighting

There was no way this wouldn't be a silhouette. The interesting thing was the bar across the sun. I am intrigued by how the sun seemingly melted the bar. The painter Turner often showed how direct strong sunlight changed objects. The reflections of color of the sun in the waves and water intrigued me. Without shooting a video how do you convey the sparkle and movement of the water?

Equipment

Unabashedly, I shoot Nikon cameras. I find them easy to use that produce quality photos. I have owned and sold quite a few of them. The camera I have now is the Nikon D850. I have a tripod, but lately I am using a light-weight fiber Manfrotto monopod with a base attachment.

Inspiration

Normally, a beach water scene has a boat on the water. What I saw in taking this photo was a foreground, a middle ground and a background. This added dimension and depth to this shot.

Editing

The most interesting element in this photo is the texture in the water. I was trying to turn the photo into an oil-painting or water-color. Which is what I did. Their are different options and procedures in Photoshop to do this. I also went back to an earlier program that gave you options to blend effects. To be quite honest, creating this photo was more like a jazz improvisation. I don't know if I could reproduce it exactly.

In my camera bag

I am very conscious of how much weight I carry. I am down to a camera, a tripod, and three lenses. My accessories are some filters, a wireless remote trigger, an extra battery, and lens cleaner and supplies. I travel with a larger bag with a laptop and assorted lenses and a flash. That way, I can pick and choose what to bring on a particular outing.

Feedback

I learned about the decisive moment waiting and timing to get that particular shot. In the age of digital, you can take all the shots you want at different settings. Yes, patience and being there at the right time sometimes is required, but getting out there and just going with the flow and capturing what interests you can be fun and rewarding. Experimentation adds the challenge of finding something different something you yourself find pleasing. Others will see what you found and like it too. We appreciate recognition for our efforts. And, I appreciate your interest. Thank you.
