It had been raining the entire day but I saw the horizon clearing up in the evening so I was hoping there would be a great sunset. When I went down to the beach about an hour before, it was still pouring rain and it was actually raining while I shot this image, but because of the cloud gap on the horizon, strong, vibrant light was able to come through and illuminate all of the clouds and moisture in the air causing for some very unique light.Equipment
Canon 6D, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L, Manfrotto Tripod, trusty lens cloth.Inspiration
I really love shooting seascapes and I grew up in California, so while visiting there for a few days during a heavy storm, I took advantage of all the unique lighting opportunities and went to all of my favorite spots along the Southern California coast.Editing
In Photoshop I blended a darker exposure for the sky with the foreground to compensate for dynamic range, I did some dodging and burning, color correcting, and I added Orton and contrast. In my camera bag
Canon 6D, Sony a7s, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L, Canon 50mm f/1.8, MeFoto Tripod, trusty lens cloth, heaps of batteries and SD cards.Feedback
When shooting seascapes you just need to adjust your shutter speed according to the speed of the tide. If it is coming at you or going back in really fast, then you can shoot a faster shutter speed and still get the drag effect. If it is moving slower, then slow it down to capture the movement. If you shoot it too slow, you will loose all the texture and just get white mist.
