Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken from the MacArthur Causeway in Miami. You have to go up on the bridge to get this iconic shot now since a marina for large yachts was built in the spot that everyone went to before. There is also a good shot from the ground to right side underneath of the bridge.

Time

I grabbed my daughter and said that we were going to take some sunset pictures of downtown Miami at around 5:30. This image was taken at 6:30PM after climbing up the bridge and taking multiple images. This was taken on a cold day in January (by Miami standards anyway) 2016. I think we have better sunsets when the weather gets a little more comfortable in South Florida.

Lighting

The sunset was in question for quite a while. No color was coming while the sun was going down. I was about to pack up & leave, but then I saw a sliver of good color and decided to stick it out. It was worth the wait to say the least. The colors were amazing for just a couple of minutes and I was in the right place at the right time!

Equipment

Canon 7d on a Manfrotto tripod, Sigma 24-105 lens, 10sec, F9, iso 100 and a CP filter.

Inspiration

I needed a new sunset shot in my portfolio and just headed out to see what I could get and spend some quality time with my beautiful daughter.

Editing

I did most of the post processing in Lightroom and them took it into On1 to give just a little more oomph. Not too much had to be done since the sunset was a great one for a change in Miami. A little boosting of the colors, some clarity and a filter in On1.

In my camera bag

At the time I took this image, I had a Canon 7d, 7dmkii, Canon 28-135, Sigma 24-105f4, Sigma 70-200f2.8. My bag has since changed for the better. I now have the Canon 7dmkii, Sony A6300, Sigma MC11 adapter for Canon, Metabones mkiv Canon to Sony, Sigma 24-105f4 (Awesome lens), Tamron 17-50 f2.8, Canon 100mm Macro and the amazing Canon 70-200 f2.8.

Feedback

If you want to capture this type of image in Miami, you just have to keep going after it. We don't always have the greatest sunsets, but when we do. They are spectacular. I had this printed on metal at 16 x 20 and it looks even better in print. It killed me to give it away to my Brother-in-law, but it looks great in his house.
