Location
There is a small herd of Bison at the base of the hill I live on, I've gotten to know the rancher that manages the herd and he calls me when something interesting happens. This is his first year raising Bison and I love his enthusiasm!Time
Lighting is a bit of a challenge when shooting the Bison, they are a wild animal and quite protective of their young so there has to be a fence between you as the photographer and the animals. It was a bit maddening waiting for them (the Bison mom and baby) to get in the right line with the sun.Lighting
All natural lighting, no reflectors for fill, which I would have loved if I could have figured out how to set that up!Equipment
This was shot with a Canon 5D Mark II with an 85mm lens, iso 100, f 1.8 1/500. No other equipment used.Inspiration
I started taking pictures to have a reference for my paintings in the studio and I have found I have as much fun with the camera as I do with the painting process. I have painted this scene, it's one of my favorites of the series of Bison shots I have taken.Editing
I did a minimum of post-processing in lightroom and photoshop, The main thing I did with this shot was to crop a full shot of the mother down to focus on the interaction between mother and calf.In my camera bag
I use two Canon cameras, the 5D Mark II I shot this with and a cropped frame 7D Mark II. My lenses are the 85mm I shot this with, a 50mm 1.4, a Sigma 10-20mm as a wide angle lens for landscapes and a Canon 70-200mm f4 non-IS, and a Manfrotto tripod and head.Feedback
Make friends with the people managing the animals. Most of the people I have talked to about animals, be it Bison or cattle they are passionate about their animals and are only too happy to share! It's not just about taking pictures, it's the back story that makes the photograph!
