Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the backyard of my family home in Vermont. They were planted years ago by my grandmother and forgotten about until I stumbled upon them one day in the spring where they had popped up through the untamed dead grass.

Time

I don't remember the exact time of day that I took this photo, but as I am not an early riser it was probably sometime in the afternoon.

Lighting

I used the natural light of sun here. I am not a fan of using flash. Sometimes the camera flash is necessary, but in most situations I try to use mother nature's flash.

Equipment

I used an Olympus digital camera for this photo. It was the first digital camera that I owned and I loved it--until one day the display screen stopped working. Now I use a Sony DSC-HX50V.

Inspiration

I loved the colors of these flowers and how something so alive and vibrant grew up out of the dead grass. Spring always makes me feel alive after being stuck inside for so many months in the winter. I love going outside as soon as spring hits to discover everything thriving again.

Editing

I use Fotor to edit my photos sometimes. I especially like the shadows feature where I can increase or decrease shading. I used Fotor to edit this photo to bring out the colors a little more and increased the contrast a bit.

In my camera bag

I carry my camera on a strap and no other equipment. I like the challenge of getting just the right shot with only my eye and the camera.

Feedback

Timing is everything. Something that is there today might not be there tomorrow, or even in a few minutes or seconds. Always have your camera with you so that you won't miss any opportunities. I have made the mistake of leaving my camera at home when I have gone out and seeing something spectacular that I would have liked to capture but can only hold in my memories now.
