Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken while visiting my mother in Minnesota. It's one of two lakes in Waverly. This is the smaller of the two lakes and I happened to be on the eastern side, looking towards the setting sun.
Time
The time of day was late afternoon, in late October. I was driving to dinner, when I saw the colors of the sky out of the corner of my eye. There were few places to stop, so actually drove onto what looked like an abandoned property to see if I could take a decent photo.
Lighting
This photo was as much about setting as it was about lighting. I wanted to try my best to capture the crazy colors the setting sun was providing, but also wanted the colors of the lake, as well as the trees and birds to be backlit. I caught the sun about to go over the horizon, just as it set beyond the horizon, and after it was well below the horizon. This is the winner from the three sets - just as it set behind.
Equipment
I have a very reliable Sony RX100 that I take everywhere with me when I travel. I used the Sony to take the photo, handheld while a tree beside me steadied me. No flash, no tripod.
Inspiration
Sunrise and sunset photos have been a challenge for me. What I see with my eyes tend to always be better than anything I seem to catch with a camera. So I am always hunting for and attempting to find a way to capture what I see. This photos proves that if you try hard enough, you work hard enough and you take enough photos, you just may get the one that proves you just may be able to do it again.
Editing
My attempts post-processing for both sunrise and sunset photos has always been for naught. I tend to over-process and things don't look real. This is one photo that didn't require much processing to bring out the full depth of the colors I saw with my naked eye.
In my camera bag
I always have a Sony compact with me, for many years now. The RX100 has been a rock. I also have a Nikon D7200, but with the body and the lens and tripod, I tend to use my Nikon for dedicated photo shoots.
Feedback
Take photos, take photos and then take some more photos. Always have some sort of picture taking device with you. Even if it's a phone. And take photos every chance you get, with anything at all that strikes your interest. Then learn all you can about how to operate your device, experiment with settings and take more photos. The build on your learning experience with a post-processing tool, and spend days learning how to make your photo look the best it can be, without it looking unnatural. Then take some more photos!
