Behind The Lens

Location

I live in the Waitakere Ranges on the out skirts of Auckland city New Zealand. This photo was taken from my driveway where I have a few edging plants growing along the driveway.

Time

One of my first images with a new lens. Taken around 8.am after a early morning after a shower of rain.

Lighting

The sun had just made an appearance over the hills behind my property and caught the raindrop on the side of the flower. As it passed though the trees the light made it stand out from the darker background.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Canon 650D, Canon EF 85mm USM 1:1.8 lens. Camera supported on a bean bag no other equipment was used.

Inspiration

The look of the rain drop hanging on to the side of the flower the way the lighting fell I couldn't pass up the opportunity for this shot. _

Editing

I cropped this shot to get a little closer to the focus of the shot, added a little contrast and a small amount of sharpening.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a 50mm 1.8 and a EFS 18 - 135mm, and a couple of filters - polarising. Travelling light.

Feedback

When taking this shot I had to lay on the ground to get the angle I required. Looking at a subject from all angles is a good thing to try. A different perspective can make some exciting captures. Always use manual settings as this also adds to your creative side and get out the shot that that wish to see. This includes the use of manual focus so as to isolate the specific area of focus (supported on either a stand or anything you can rest your camera on the keep it static and achieve the best focus you can. An wide open aperture will give you a small depth of field and ensure there is a blurred background.
