Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Porthcawl, South Wales on a very stormy day. It was extremely difficult to get to the top of this precipise, as it was very slippery, so I had to crawl on my hands and knees to achieve the shot

Time

It was taken around midday, just as it was whipping up a Storm Gertrude

Lighting

I just knew that this image had to be in black and white so as to pull out the textures and focus your eye on the atmospheric movement of the clouds and waves. There wasn't any chance of using lights obviously, so just had to catch the light at the appropriate moment.

Equipment

I used the Sony A7 for this shot, taken with an Olympus 28mm vintage lens that I'd picked up for £25! That's the beauty of Sony mirrorless cameras. I took this shot handheld, as there was no way I could take the time to set up a tripod, due to the weather conditions

Inspiration

I knew there was a storm brewing and wanted to gain the best representation of the elements that I could. Being surrounded by water, living in Swansea, it wasn't hard to know where to go, but finding a lighthouse that had public access to it was a little more tricky; however, local knowledge helps!

Editing

Post-processing was where I decided to turn it into a black and white image, and play around dodging and burning, to bring out the contrasting shades

In my camera bag

I'm a new convert to the Sony mirrorless A7 full frame camera, after having divorced Nikon, and it's a decision I'm glad I made. They are so much easier to take around with you, especially as a female shooter, due to the weight factor and so I take more photos now because it's more convenient

Feedback

Be very careful taking a photo like this. Once I was at the top, it was very scary and I nearly fell coming back down. However, there's some images that are just worth the risk!
