Puez-Odle Natural Park (Bolzano) - Italia

It is something unique to enjoy this spectacle of nature.
The stillness of these mountains that have been raised from the seabed up to these heights
There's only the wind blowing through the snow falling and strength of elements.
Front of my eyes the mountain looks like overturns towards the right side…

Amazing view, and it looks really cold! Hike or climb? Brutal looking and harsh as nature can be. Nice capture!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo called "Overturned" was taken in the Puez-Odle Natural Park, one of the most iconic and beautiful places in Dolomites (northern Italy).

Time

I shoot it in the afternoon, not so late because all around it was covered with clouds and I knew that there would have been a sunset without golden light. The problem was that the strong wind and the first snow had arrived that day.

Lighting

The light was completely unexpected, completely unpredictable. Shortly before there was a strong snowstorm and no visibility. Suddenly the clouds began to thin out and the tops of the surrounding mountains became visible. The initial completely white atmosphere became so soft and really enjoyable compared to a few minutes before: the wind blows softly, the snow was still falling and the clouds let spread a beautiful "damped" light.

Equipment

I took this one with my Nikon D800, Nikkor 14.0-24.0mm, Mafrotto tripod)

Inspiration

Every time I go out to take pictures I never expect a particular situation, but I try to take advantage of the weather conditions occurring, even if they're not so favorable. We all know that in the mountains everything can change in few minutes and in that case it has been so. I'm happy because after the storm passed I went out with a right timing to capture the drama of the scene. Some minutes before, maybe unconsciously, I was watching out from the hut, where my friend and I were repaired waiting for a more favorable weather and less dangerous, and I was starting to think about this type of photo, but I can't say it for sure. With a different weather condition I would have reacted differently and I would have had a different inspiration and a definitely different picture as well. In this case the inspiration was kind of immediate and I tried to do my best to capture what my eyes were watching.

Editing

First of all I took this photo starting from is a single exposure, on a tripod at low ISO values. This allowed me to work on a very clear, no noisy and very sharp image from the outset. Post processing on this one was pretty simple: I balanced my raw file with Lightroom, adding a touch of contrast and a little desaturation. The white balance was a little bit warmer than I wanted and I compensated that with some points of blue temperature. Then I simply opened it in Photoshop, cropped it and added some contrast to the midtones.

In my camera bag

In my backpack I almost always bring three lenses for my D800: a wide-angle zoom Nikkor 14.0-24.0 mm f/2.8 with holder and filters, a mid tele zoom Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 and a tele zoom Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8. This allows to cover a quite wide focal range on landscape photography. Sometimes, beside to this modern kit, I bring an old Nikkormat FT2 with two great prime lenses: 50mm f/2 and 105 f/2.5, both from Nikon. It was the camera system of my parents, the one with which I started to take pictures some twenty years ago. Sometimes I love to go back to the film grain.

Feedback

I find that the most important thing on landscape photography is to find the right moment to shoot: sometimes it's just luck, other times the key is to figure out when it's time to shoot. Being on the spot before shooting allows you to find the best vantage points and to become familiar with the location and this is in the process of shooting a big plus.
