Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Lucerne valley for a possible magazine submission. It involved hair and makeup wardrobe and a wonderful location. It was a wonderful collaboration. Sadly we did not get chosen for the submission.

Time

It was later in the day I think like 5:30 when the sun was setting.

Lighting

On this one I just used natural lighting. I loved the hair light the sun was giving on her red hair. It reminded me of a lioness, very fierce! It gave greAt rim lighting on her body as well.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D80 with 70-200 mm lens. Hand held no flash just me, the model and my camera.

Inspiration

I wanted something really fierce looking and high fashion. The clothes I wanted dark and odd. Something you might see in a magazine kind of over the top, but beautiful as well. I loved how it turned out.

Editing

I did retouching on her face and skin as well as lighting. I fixed the colors so that they stood out more. Basically contrast, dodging, burning, all the usual for portrait photography.

In my camera bag

Now days I am shooting with a Sony A7 and I love my Carl Zeiss 55mm F1.2 lens as well as my Sony 70-200mm. I just got the Omega reflector which I use for most of my portraits.

Feedback

I say be patient and find that golden hour where the light is just right. Scope out your spot before hand and study the light to that time of day. Shoot in manual especially when shooting directly into the sun you will get sharper and faster focus. Be comfortable with your model so you can direct them in their posing. Have fun and love what you do!
