Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in our truck up in the northeastern part of Tennessee as we were preparing to head home with our new puppy.

Time

I don’t remember the exact time now, but it was taken in the late afternoon. We had gotten up that morning and loaded up the kids telling them we were going on a surprise trip. They didn’t know we had been talking to the man that owned this puppy about us coming up to view the puppies he had for sale. It took us about 3 hours to get there and then we looked at everyone. This is after all of that.

Lighting

Luckily, there was a good mix of sun and clouds that day, so the natural light was perfect inside the truck. I almost exclusively shoot using natural light as opposed to flash in order to get more natural lighting but also because people tend to notice more that you’re taking a picture when you use flash and then the moment is often lost.

Equipment

I used my Nikon d5100 camera with my kit lens.

Inspiration

I am a big proponent of lifestyle photography. I am always trying to capture the little moments in my family’s lives so as to preserve that history. This was both one of the first surprise day trips we had done with our kids plus the first time they had gotten to help pick out a dog, so I wanted to be sure and document the occasion.

Editing

I do a little bit of post-processing in Lightroom and/or Photoshop with most of my images. I try to keep all of my images as “real” as possible, so my post-processing is limited to cleaning up the lighting where necessary and every now and then removing a distracting element from the background. My lifestyle photos tend to receive much less editing because I want to show as much as possible exactly what was going on.

In my camera bag

My d5100, the kit lens, my 35mm prime lens (pretty much lives on my camera), and my old nikkor zoom lens, I also have an older canon rebel digital camera and the lenses that go with it that travel along as backup, although use of them is extremely limited now-days. Even when my camera is not along, I always have my phone with me to use of an interesting shot happens.

Feedback

Always be paying attention to what’s going on around you and don’t get too lost in your life to where you think the little moments are not important. This shot honestly happened mostly because we were trying to entertain ourselves while my husband was still talking to the man we bought the puppy from, so I decided to go ahead and take a few pictures. I have photos on here that were the result of way more planning, etc... but this moment in time from our lives is the photo that has captured more attention. The little moments/memories matter. People are able to connect with them. As an aside, for everyone wondering about the “little puppy.” We kept him for a couple of years, but he did not turn out to be the kid dog that we wanted and was not happy being just a pet. My husband has a friend who hunts squirrel dogs, so we gave this puppy (at that point, dog) to him. He updates us periodically, and has stated that Max (the puppy’s name) is doing wonderfully. He lets him and another dog of his hunt together and they make an excellent team. So, while he did not end up with the forever home with us that we planned, he ended up in a forever home that he loves.
