Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a studio in Wynwood, the art district of Miami, FL. The model is a friend of mine. She agreed to pose for me and one of my favorite photos from that shoot.

Time

We shot in a studio between 7:00 & 10:00 PM, with studio lights.

Lighting

I used one single strobe with a diffuser. I wanted to lighting to be more dramatic and yet still flattering.

Equipment

I shot handheld with my Canon 7D, a 24-70mm Canon zoom lens and one single strobe light.

Inspiration

I had an idea to shoot an implied nude with a guitar hiding the model's anatomy.

Editing

Yes, I edited the photo in Photoshop. There were some stickers on the guitar and they were distracting so I removed them. I also removed a couple of blemishes from the model's skin. Then I processed the photo as a black and White using Silver Efex Pro. I find color in nudes distracting so I tend to process them as black and white, besides I like the texture and grain of black and white film.

In my camera bag

I carry a Canon 7d Mark II, my lens kit which varies on what I'm shooting. I have an 8mm fisheye, a 12-24mm zoom, a 24-70mm, a 70-200mm zoom and a 300mm telephoto. I also have several radio triggers, batteries, chargers, cables. Depending on the shoot I will bring reflectors or some handheld LED lights, etc.

Feedback

I find the most important thing is establishing rapport with the model. Getting the model to relax and feel at ease is the key to getting natural looking shots. Then it is easier to experiment and try different poses.
