This photo was taken in my back yard in the second winter after I moved to New England. The pony is a rescued Shetland who I brought with me. This is more snow than we ever had in Old England and he just loved charging through it - so I lined up with his favorite path to get the shot.Time
This was in the morning just after I let the horses out of the barn so they were excited and playful.Lighting
A white pony in the snow needed a little help from a shadow to really stand out so I watched for the moment that he cleared the shadow and had sun on his face, but the shadow on the snow made him stand out.Equipment
This was taken with a Canon 7D MkII, 70-200 lens, f8Inspiration
I wanted to capture the joy the pony had playing in the snow and white on white made it more of a challenge.Editing
Minimal post processing, just adjusted the white balance to lose a bit of excess blue in the image. In my camera bag
I do a lot of shelter pet photography so have a sturdy 28-70 which gives me enough range to stay back from fearful animals, I love the 70-200 but keep that a bit safer as the shelter work is hard on equipment. The 7D MkII has been a great body - responding quickly and standing up to a fair bit of abuse.Feedback
Getting the light and shade was important for this shot - using the shadow to highlight the pony meant getting to the right spot and timing the point that he emerged with sunlight on his face.
