Behind The Lens

Location

I was fortunate enough to be asked to shoot a work colleagues wedding. We met for coffee and I explained my style, my genre to see if it lined up with their expectations and ideals. It did, and it culminated in this very shot! This was shot in the Wairarapa, which is an hour's drive north-east of Wellington, New Zealand.

Time

Just after the girls had finished getting ready I invited them to come outside to get their individual portraits done. The beautiful bride was shot early afternoon, approximately 1pm.

Lighting

I wanted the image to be light and airy, which in a way summed up the bride. This image was taken with natural light, shaded from the strong sun by a beautiful big tree.

Equipment

Nikon D610 with a Nikkor 80-200mm F2.8D lens.

Inspiration

She was energetic, but delicate, determined but soft spoken and was deserved of an image she could be proud of. The bride and groom entrusted me to capture their day, without forced staging. That in mind I let the bride be herself, offered minimal pose coaching and just let her be herself.

Editing

My standard, which consists of minimal sharpening, slight contrast, adjusting of highlights and a touch of black.

In my camera bag

Nikon D2X, 50mm F1.8G, and that's about it now. It goes with me everywhere I go - you never really know what you might capture! Sure, its easy to carry around your small camera phone, agreed, but for me I'm happy to lug around my antiquated, 2004, 1kg Nikon D2X everywhere!

Feedback

Don't try to overthink things, see images before they happen and be aware of your model/bride/subject! Relax and breathe and just let things happen naturally.
