Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was shot from the front of the Dubai Metro as it raced back towards the city.
Time
Shot at dusk after a fantastic day exploring the metro line and seeing some of the sights this wonderful city had to offer.
Lighting
Capturing this image was a real challenge for me due to the rapidly decreasing light outside the bright lights of the metro were causing a lot of reflections off the window and due to the shape of front window i had to hand hold the camera as close to the screen as possible and use my hands to form a shield to prevent light from entering through the sides.
Equipment
I used my trusty canon 5DIII with the kit 24 -105mm lens, I had hardly any equipment on me that day due to travelling on foot through a lot of different areas. If I was to revisit this shot I would definitely take a circular polarising filter with me to negate the reflections from the metro's windscreen.
Inspiration
Initially I was trying to capture the sense of excitement, anticipation and sheer awe that I experienced approaching this amazing city. The motion blur visualises the sense of time travel I experienced travelling from the older traditional area of Dubai to the futuristic new city that rapidly rose from the desert in front of me
Editing
I used Lightroom to boost the vibrancy and recreate the bright colours i witnessed and I used the de-haze function as there was a lot of airborne sand in the original raw file, post processing is not my strong point so I generally avoid doing too much.
In my camera bag
I spend a lot of time on foot, travelling around the world with work so I try to keep things light, i use a Canon 5D MKIII with the kit 24-105mm lens and I have a 50mm f1.4 which I use for some street/portraiture work, I have 2 canon 600EXRT flashes although I rarely use these for travel photography unless there is a strong backlight and I need to fill flash, other than that I use a circular polarising filter (mainly to protect my lens) and occasionally a neutral density filter for daytime long exposure.
Feedback
For anyone wishing to recreate this image i would highly recommend purchasing a gold card for the Dubai Metro, it is inexpensive and affords access to the front/rear carriage allowing these incredible views along the metro line. If I could do anything differently it would be to fit a circular polarising filter to my lens to cancel out the internal light reflecting off the wind shield.
