Behind The Lens

Location

I was out shooting with my niece in the River Heights neighbourhood in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. We were photographing the trees as the leaves were beginning to change in September 29, 2013.

Time

This was taken at 14:00 hours.

Lighting

This was a natural light photograph. I am strictly an amateur photographer and I don't have any equipment other than my camera, lenses, flash and tripod.

Equipment

I shoot with a Pentax K10D camera body. I used a Sigma AF 10-20mm F4-5.6 EX DC lens. This was a handheld photograph. No flash was utilized. The other settings for this shot were: ISO 200 Focal length 10mm Exposure Bias 0 ev Aperture f11 Shutter Speed 1/250

Inspiration

I was inspired to take this photo when looking up at the gorgeous elm trees that line many of the streets in this neighbourhood. The sky was a beautiful blue with hints of clouds. I have to admit that I love Ansel Adams and his minimalistic photos of trees.

Editing

Absolutely no post-processing on this photo.

In my camera bag

I carry two camera bodies - the Pentax K10D and an older Pentax istDL. I carry the Sigma lens that I used to shoot this photo as well as the Pentax SMC-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens and the Pentax AX 50-200. I also own aPentax SMCP-DA* 300mm f/4 ED (IF) SDM. The wide coverage is ideal for a variety of telephoto applications, including portraiture, sports and scenery. I don't normally carry this unless I am shooting cycling events that my husband participates in. I also have a Pentax DA 1:2.8 35mm Macro Limited lens for macro photography.

Feedback

I am a self taught photographer. I have been told over the years that I have "an eye for composition". I learned to shoot with a Pentax ME Super film camera given to me over 40 years ago (and I still own 2 of them!). When I was shooting film, I tended to focus more on the shot but digital allowed me the luxury of shooting non-stop. I still look at my surroundings before I begin to shoot and walk around to get a variety of perspectives for each shot. I think it's important to realize that you should always shoot what you are passionate about and not what other people want you to shoot. As an amateur, I don't have to shoot anything specific. I also have a passion for shooting family gatherings as they happen - not as they are posed.
