Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a building in downtown Toronto. Unbeknownst to us we were not allowed to take photographs in it and ended up getting escorted out of the building. They were fine with me keeping the photos I had already taken, just couldn't take any more.

Time

I believe this was taken around 8pm the sun was almost fully down but we were still getting some nice light through the skylights. Long summer days are great for getting the most out of a day of shooting.

Lighting

The floor lights are the real winners here. As soon as we saw them we knew we wanted to play with camera angles to make it look like Spider-Man was climbing up a building. Its one of the rare occasions where the photo came out exactly how we envisioned it.

Equipment

I took this with my Canon 6D and Canon 50mm f/1.2. I also used a Canon Speedlite with a collapsible Rogue diffuser. For this photo my settings were.. Apature: f/2 ISO: 100 (always and forever 100 ISO) Shutter Speed: 1/20 Focal Length: 50/1

Inspiration

Todd Whalen (Spider-Man) is always inspiring me with his Cosplays. Working with him always helps me break out of whatever photography slump I'm in and pushes my boundaries. Whenever he creates a new Cosplay we always make sure we set aside a full day to walk around and shoot. When he tells me about his upcoming projects I immediately start hunting down the best locations and he starts messaging me with reference photos/screenshots. We always seem to bring out the best in each other when it comes to our photoshoots.

Editing

This photo is actually almost straight out of camera and I'm pretty darn proud of that. I cooled it down a bit, then added some more shadows/vignette to the left side of the photo to bring to focus more onto Spidey and make it seems like he was high off the ground.

In my camera bag

I recently just sold ALL my Canon gear to go smaller and mirrorless. At the moment I now have Fuji-XT1, Wide angle 10-24mm f/1.4, Telephoto 55-200mm f/3.5 and Macro 60mm f/2.4 . I find having those three types of lenses gives me enough range for all types of photography. I also keep two 64gb SD cards on hand and 3 fully charged batteries (there is nothing worse than having your camera die and not have any back ups! ).

Feedback

Find someone you work really well with. You can't beat great model/photographer chemistry. Building these kinds of relationships can take time but are absolutely worth it. I have been working with Todd for about 4 years now and each photoshoot we do keeps getting better and better because we trust each other and respect each others opinions and input. So go out there! Make some new friends!!
