Inscription from Memorial Stone:
Bible Covered Bridge
In 1783 the Christian Bible Family settled in this area on a land grand from North Carolina, constructing a two story log house nearby.
In 1923, E.A. Bible, a direct descendant of this early settler, who had been crossing Little Chuckey Creek at a ford, had this bridge built so he would have better access to the Warrensburg Road.
It was constructed by A.A. McLean, a noted Tennessee bridge-builder of that day, who placed covers on bridges to preserve the timbers.
In 1948, the bridge was deeded to Greene County and in 1975, it became an historical structure through t he efforts of the Greene County Heritage Trust.
Restoration of the bridge was completed in 2004 by the Greene County Highway Department with a grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of the historical Bible Covered Bridge (built in 1923) was taken in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains, in East Tennessee, along Warrensburg Road, a small back country road located in Greene County, TN.

Time

I usually try to shoot around golden hour, either in the morning or evening, but with the snowfall, morning was too treacherous (these are the kinds of roads that don't get salt and scraped very often), and evening would have been dangerous with refreezing. I was already pushing my luck to get there at all, but it was close to midday when I arrived which is often a bad time to photograph anything because of harsh lighting. It actually worked out beautifully, so never count anything out if you can work with it. I think a good photographer has to figure out how to make the most of the situation to get the best shots possible.

Lighting

Happily the sun was reflected beautifully by the snow and the whole world lit up with warm, natural light! Mother Nature gave me a huge light reflector, snow! So, I got warm light coming down from the sun itself bouncing off of cool blue snow that made a lovely combination!

Equipment

This photo was shot with a Nikon D610 and a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, handheld, no flash, just natural light and the snow as a reflector!

Inspiration

I had been waiting for a snowfall to photograph this bridge, and braved some pretty slick backroads to get there. I likely wouldn't have made it without a 4-wheel drive, but determination is everything! I was rewarded with some beautiful light (almost magical with the glow of the snow), once I arrived, and was able to capture it in all its beauty!

Editing

I almost always shoot bracketed (3 exposure) shots and process them in a combination of Lightroom and Nik HDR Efex Pro 2, with touch-ups and fine-tuning done in Photoshop. This photo was processed using this procedure.

In my camera bag

I've gone through so much gear over the years (bad case of Gear Acquisition Syndrome), bags, cameras, lenses, tripods, monopods, flash, modifiers —all too much! I now take the simple approach. I carry one Billingham Hadley bag which holds my two Nikon D610s with favorite lenses (24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-300 f/4.5-5.6) attached for quick draw, and always have a "nifty fifty" 50mm f/1.8 in the front pocket. This bag also holds my Nikon SB-600 flash, memory cards, and assorted filters and attachments. I usually keep my Manfrotto tripod in my vehicle in case I need it.

Feedback

As I mentioned above, don't discount the shot because you think the lighting/time of day/etc isn't perfect. This midday shot is one of my most popular and has won awards (like here at Viewbug and was published in the Superbowl edition of the Knoxville News Sentinel). Find your light and make it work for you, and you can sometimes create a wow moment that is very unique, a shot no one else has ever done. Also, invest in a vehicle to get you where you need to go ;)
