I noticed that there was quite a bit of fog this evening and I decided to bring one of my cameras to work with me. I was just finishing up a job picking up a show from 'Sound Academy', on Polson street, and I had a few hours to kill. I noticed the fog had started to clear , so I quickly parked my truck on Polson, went over to the pier side and and took a few photos. I was impressed with how they turned once I finished processing them. There were others I'd shot as well that night, and posted one of them just around the same time as this one.Time
The time I took these photos was probably around 01:00 - 03:00, as the show ended a few hours beforehand and there was no one around left to bother me.Lighting
The blue-ish, purple/red hue above the city, mixed with the layer of fog just above the lake gave it an almost 'abandoned and eerie ' look, and I loved that.Equipment
I shot this scene using my Nikon D700 body and my Nikon AF/S 24-70mm f2.8 lens perched on a Manfrotto tripod, at about 25 seconds.Inspiration
I'd always wanted to shoot something really cool that was surrounded in fog, but never had my camera handy...just so happens that, on this particular night, I did and knew I would have a few hours to kill while still getting paid.Editing
Processed in LR with some contrast, a bit of sharpening, a touch of white balance adjustment, and then I added some vignette to draw the eyes into the centre of the photo.In my camera bag
I normally carry a couple of Nikon bodies, and assortment of Nikon telephoto and prime lenses, a Sigma 10-20mm wide angle lens, a Nikon SB800 and SB700 or two SB700's, extra batteries/memory cards/ND filters/polarizing filters...whatever I can fit and whatever the situation calls for, I guess. If I'm going somewhere to do portraiture, I change it up a little and carry an extra bag or two with flash kits, stands, etc.Feedback
Patience when taking photos like this, and it's not advisable to go alone, in the middle of the night - take a buddy. Also, I've ruined many long exposures by forgetting that I'm on a bridge, and the slightest vibration will ruin a totally awesome shot! Also, cover the viewfinders eyepiece (light will get in) and raise and lock up the mirror!!
