Behind The Lens

Location

We took this photo in our home studio in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States.

Time

This was shot in the afternoon but we used our lighting equipment so no natural light was involved.

Lighting

We wanted to create a dark mood with this set so we relied on our studio lighting.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 50D and a Canon Speedlite 430EX II flash.

Inspiration

I love the culture of Dia de Los Muertos and really wanted to do a shoot with this theme. We met Aryn Fox, an extremely talented body painter, at an art show in Cincinnati. I told her the idea and she was very enthusiastic about it! We shot the set and we got the cover for Gothesque Magazine issue no. 6!

Editing

We always do post-processing with our images. For this photo we added more shadows, lowered the saturation, and adjusted the color balances. We edit our photos in Adobe PhotoShop and Lightroom.

In my camera bag

We always have our Canon 50D and our flash.

Feedback

If you have a specific makeup theme in mind find the right person for the job. We have worked with several makeup artists over the years but all of them specialize in different areas. In this case, Aryn Fox was the perfect artist for the look we wanted. This applies to finding the right model as well. We work with several amazing models but all of them have their strengths. We chose Lisa Butters for this set because she is ideal for darker themes. She pulled off the look exactly how we pictured it. We also built a subtle set because we wanted the makeup to be the focus. We didn't want the background to be too elaborate because we wanted the model to be the main focus.
