Behind The Lens
Location
This was part of the food and product portfolio building project. I am primarily a self-educated people photographer; however, I took this self-directed project on to increase my overall photographic ability and lighting proficiency.Time
While this was shot in the early afternoon, that doesn't have a lot of impact on this photo since most of the light is from a speedlight.Lighting
For me, the lighting is the most exciting part of this photo. As a portrait photographer, I shoot a lot of two or three light setups and work a lot with ratios between the lights. I this photo I went with a single speedlight in a softbox above and slightly behind the main subject, the parfait. All front lighting came from white reflectors cards placed just out of camera frame.Equipment
This is a technical shot using a Nikon D7000 mounted on a tripod, with an 85mm lens, at f6.7, 1/90 and ISO 400.Inspiration
This was part of a self-directed project to learn and improve my food and product photography. One of my early mentors is a food photographer, and I've always admired the subtleties and nuance of lighting, camera angle, and styling involved such work. While visiting a friend's restaurant, I noticed the parfait in the display case. The red of the strawberries, the color of the cream and the gold foil on top created lots of interest and I thought would make a great subject.Editing
The picture was processed in Lightroom 5. I slightly adjusted the curves for more punch and moved the clarity down to give it more of a dreamy look. For the color, I just increase vibrance overall and increased luminance on the yellows only.In my camera bag
Since I'm usually a people/portrait photographer, I like a lot of long, fast lens. For weddings, for example, I carry two camera bodies a Nikon D7000 and a D800. I usually have a Tameron 24-70mm f2.8, a Nikon 70-200 f2.8 and two prime lenses, a Nikon 50mm f1.8, and a Nikon 85mm f1.8. Since I like to make my own atmosphere with lighting, I carry three speedlights with different modifiers. Of course when I'm in the studio my options are only limited by what I can get my hands on!Feedback
The best advice I've every gotten, (and the best that I can give) is practice, practice, practice and explore on your own enough times that it's second nature when you have to do it for real! The doing it over and over again will do a couple of things, you'll learn a lot of ways that it will not produce the look that you want and help you discover looks that you might not have imagined.
