This photo is taken in Japan, the city of Kanazawa in a park near Kanazawa castle.Time
It was a really magic day of 01.01.2015. Just a day before it was raining and raining and raining all the time with no hint of snow. But... 2 hours before midnight (and start of the New Year!) the temperature went down to -5 and snow came instead of rain. In the morning of the first day of 2015 everything was covered by thick layer of snow and the city looked like a big Christmas fairy-tale scenery! This picture was taken at about noon but it didn't really matter because it was very cloudy.Lighting
As long as it was very cloudy the day was not very bright and no direct sunlight was there. Generally such conditions are considered as not very good for taking great pictures (at least because you cannot involve shadows) but it all depends. In given circumstances I saw an opportunity to take an interesting picture using linear perspective and combination of white snow and dark trees which was making the picture nearly monochrome. A person dressed in blue jeans and biege jacket on the right-hand side is the most colorful part of the composition.Equipment
This picture was taken by Nikon D800E with Nikkor 28-105 f3.5-4.5 lens at 60 mm focal length.Inspiration
Such scenes look flat quite often but not in this case. When I came to the point from which I took this picture and looked around I was amazed by the depth of the view: two trees in front, empty field behind them, distant trees, a person looking as a bright color spot... Just wow! To make a long story short: I came, I saw, I shot!Editing
The only post-processing was some adjustment of contrast. In my camera bag
In former times I used to carry 10kg backpack full of various stuff. Eventually I came to understanding that I can achieve not less with smaller volume (and weight!) of gear that I have with me. For now my "traveller's set" looks as follows: Nikon D800E, Nikkor 28-105 f3.5-4.5, Sigma 70-300 f4.0-5.6, Voigtländer Ultron 40mm f2.0 and Zeiss Planar T 85mm f1.4. Also I have monopod and tripod but none of them was used to take this picture.Feedback
If you go to Japan in winter time you should go to the Sea of Japan coast of Honshyu island. This area has quite humidly climate which guarantees lots of snow in case if the temperature is below zero. The major challenge is to pick the scene: all Japanese scenes are VERY beautiful. Well, at least for me. :)
