Behind The Lens

Location

Taken at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, one of my regular haunts to visit armed with camera. This cheeky Robin followed me for quite a while, no doubt hoping for something tasty to eat.

Time

This photo was taken around 1pm in the afternoon during my lunchbreak.

Lighting

The lighting was natural, outdoors and not that great as it was very early Spring and pretty cold but still bright enough to get a decent shot.

Equipment

The camera I used was a Panasonic Lumix FZ45, no flash, tripod or any other equipment, just a very obliging Robin. When I go out for a lunchtime stroll I'm limited with my time so it's a case of grab just the camera and go. I'm still learning when it comes to the manual settings on the camera but I'm actually quite impressed at the quality of photos this camera produces. It has a wide angle 24x zoom lens plus macro so it's adequate for the subject areas I'm interested in.

Inspiration

I'm a nature lover, flowers, trees and birds especially so these tend to be my subjects most of the time. This Robin in particular was so chubby compared to the others around the gardens that I couldn't resist it.

Editing

No post processing, this was a lucky shot which turned out pretty well and didn't really need any processing. The green mossy rock helped enhance the shot because of the contrast of colour with the orange on the Robin.

In my camera bag

Normally just the camera and SD card especially when it's a quick lunchtime stroll.

Feedback

Patience and more patience when it comes to wildlife. This chubby Robin was jumping all over the place but kept going back to the same rock so it was a case of keep the camera on that spot and wait. I've stood in that same place trying to capture a kingfisher that seems to hang out in the Botanics over the Winter but have not yet managed to get a good clear shot of it.
