This was taken December 2015 just after Christmas in Yellowstone National Park. I had been in search of a great bull for a couple of days with little luck and then I could not believe my eyes! This Bison was so big that his horns like like mini-horns. He was coming toward us and I just kept shooting. What an exhilarating experience. To me, these animals are so representative of our great country.

Behind The Lens

Location
the image of this huge Bison was taken in the Lamar Valley in Yellowstone National Park this past December. There are hundreds of Bison on the area but I was in search of the largest bull I could find. Just note the the ration of horns and head! This was a big boy.
Time
The bull was making his way slowly down to the water and the willows around 2 p.m.
Lighting
I followed him or rather moved ahead of him so that I could get him in the shaded area, it was very sunny for a December afternoon in northern Wyoming.
Equipment
Nikon D4s, Sigma 150-600 sport lens, Handheld since I was getting in and out of the car at 490mm
Inspiration
See this animal just made me think about America's Big 5 and he was so perfectly representative of our great wildlife
Editing
Post processing included exposure and sharping
In my camera bag
For this trip I took the Nikon D4s, Nikon 810, Sigma Sport lens 150-600 plus 1.4 teleconverter, Nikon 70-200 mm and a couple of wide angle lens.
Feedback
I am on the learning curve as a wildlife photographer so this is what I have learned... as a portrait photographer I was very good at reading people, the soul behind the eyes. Not just a pretty picture. A very real representation of that person. If you look at that old bull you can see "him" in his eyes. Animals carry that depth that tell you who they are. I feel a passion for this kind of portrait work than I ever have before.
