Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Venice, Italy at the edge of Piazza San Marco (St Mark's Square); facing NNE. The Photo Blitz store in the alley was a happy surprise.

Time

We were heading back to the hotel after a successful sunrise shoot. The glow of the golden lights in the alley windows caught my attention. It was unfortunate that once I got the shot composed the hanging lamp in the arch went out as did the lamps in the alley.

Lighting

I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time; thought if a few minutes sooner I would have had the lamps glowing too.

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon EOS 7D with an EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. A tripod was used as well. No flash.

Inspiration

There is something about how things look at sunrise... in this case the softness of the natural light meets the intensity of the artificial light.

Editing

My workflow always begins with some basic Lightroom adjustments. Once this was done I wasn't seeing what I remembered. It lacked the detail I remembered and the light that initially caught my attention. To revive the detail and light intensity that I remembered I used the detail extractor in Nik Color Efex Pro 4. Nothing too extreme; but it was enough to bring out the pattern in the marble and the various shades of golden light.

In my camera bag

My Canon EOS 7D and the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens is a must. And more often than not I also carry a shutter release remote, B+W ND filters, a wide angle EF-S 10-22mm lens, and a tripod.

Feedback

Some images are not planned. Keep an eye on your surroundings; when something captures your attention -capture it. Use your tools (camera and post processing) to recreate the image you remember seeing; to recreate the feeling you remember feeling.
