Every harbor has an downwind - downcurrent corner behind the pier where all that people throw into the water comes on display. While those who do that remain anonymous, the whole view speaks volumes about us all; those which do it, those which allow it, those which don't care, and those unable to prevent it.

How sad! I don't want to "like" this photo, though it makes a very good point!

I heard today that in the year 2050 that the weight of plastic in the ocean will be greater than the weight of fish in the ocean! This totally illustrates that statement.

Behind The Lens

Location

This one was made in a harbor which better remains un-named, since it's only one of a million other harbors similar and worse. Every harbor has one or several nooks where the winds and currents collect such junk... The problem is, when one knows such places it's easy to keep them clean on a more or less regular basis. Except when no-one seems to care enough to remove all that jetsam and flotsam, forgetting that such things are all too easily seen - and not only by the local folks. Oh well. Not caring appears to be another black mark of our times.

Time

Date/Time: February 4th, 2013... 15:12:19 hours.

Lighting

Shutter Speed 1/400 sec, f/2.8, ISO 160, 0.00 eV, Metering Mode Pattern, Flash did not fire, Focal Length 6.2 mm, White Balance Auto... that's it.

Equipment

Canon PowerShot D10 was at hand, as it was in the pocket at the time - a nice small, well-made camera - quick to draw and shoot, used without any added gear.

Inspiration

There are positively and negatively charged inspirations, and guess which one was screaming here... It was immediately meant to be published as a "good bad example" of what We The People do to our World's life blood. What bothers me more, it's not getting any better, never mind all the warnings, explanations, pleas, punishing or publishing. The same people which do such things would raise an unholy ruckus if they found a fly in their soup - but in the same mind easily forget that all our soups are made with one and the same water. For, the Stupidity Rules - and Nature fights back! What with our self-destructive behavior, what with the forces the Nature can and does unleash... you know. It was said, "when the gods wish to punish someone, they take away their mind". Go figure...

Editing

This photo was mainly re-cropped a tad, since the small Canon has a rather humble zoom. The photo is otherwise as it appeared in the camera.

In my camera bag

I always found it easier to carry a photo vest than any photo bag. So I load my photo vest with whatever I might need for my photo session, walk or trip, while my photo bags usually keep the equipment I'm not using at the moment. The vest's many pockets usually contain two cameras, spare batteries, ND and CPL filters, and one photo clamp standing in for a tripod. Recently I include a small action camera, mainly for its wide field of view and resistance to water and weather. The vest also has large-lens pockets that contain a small water bottle, sandwich, or a bar of chocolate if I plan on being out for the whole day. There is about three meters length of paracord or similar strong, thin rope, one hefty pocket knife, and a lighter. Using the tools mentioned above, much can be improvised along the way, so that's all I need. Recently I made it even more comfortable for me, and take the essentials along in a waist pouch. Simplicity and comfort; two best ingredients in most situations!

Feedback

We all are creatures of our habits, and our themes are entirely dependent of our interests and the ways we live. So, the only really useful advice would be to have a camera along at all times! Photographers do it as a matter of course. As to the winning the Contests and Challenges... let me tell you a story about us; about another way we function. My recent Challenge theme was "NO TRACE OF HUMAN RACE" and the added explanation was "Share your best photos showing areas with no traces of humans - like 10 million years ago." Well, that was one good bad example - and made me work like a worm in stone! Too many people submitted totally carelessly chosen photos and I've had to remove MORE THAN HALF of the total entries because their authors did not respect the requirements! And like a fool, I thought this Challenge would be simple enough for everyone! It surely was not simple for me, because I've had to check almost every single entry for traces of human race and activities - instead of entrants doing it before submitting their works! The photos I have had to remove contained humans, houses, gardens, cars, car tracks, fences, plowed fields, piers, boats, stairs, sawn-off tree stumps, paths, footsteps, roads, jet contrails, power pylons and lines, and comm towers. Many also submitted such "areas" like macros or close-ups of flowers, butterflies, leaves. Then there was the Moon, night, water surfaces, tree branches, astrophotos and such. Worth mentioning are those which offered city streets, passages, walls, junk, bicycles... their idea of "like 10 million years ago". I may have even missed some human traces in the batch ready for the Challenge Voting Phase, mind! But the questions that are bothering me are: Why submit at all if you can't respect the Challenge requirements? What is to gain if you go against the Challenge theme and cause the removal of your photo? What kind of a photographer would anyone want to be if they can't control what's in their photos? No-one should expect any Challenge creator to disregard their own theme just because one's photo is " otherwise beautiful". And some deleted photos were really beautiful - it's only that these did not fit the requriements! Let me suggest: wrongly submitted photo can not win. Irresponsible photographers won't deserve respect. Deleted photos are not an achievement at all - just the opposite. It's called spamming. Such folks might find themselves un-followed or blocked if they persist in such behavior, simply because at the moment there are no more effective means to fight spam. To Challenge creators, let me say: please do not allow spam in your Challenges, much less a Win. Choose themes that you can control for compliance, and remove whatever does not fit! Only seriously controlled Challenges (and Contests) can be fun for all. When forming your Challenges be careful and precise, check your spelling, know what you ask for, and stand by your requirements no matter what. Have a Good Light, all! And Stay Safe!
